Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs 9850X3D: Which X3D CPU Should You Buy?
Updated October 12, 2026 · PC Atlas
AMD's X3D processors stack extra L3 cache on top of the cores. Games love cache, so these chips top nearly every gaming benchmark. The two you'll see most are the Ryzen 7 9800X3D (launched November 2024 at $479) and the newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
The short answer
Buy the 9800X3D unless the 9850X3D is within about $20 of it. Reviews put the 9850X3D at roughly 3% faster in games, an incremental gain you won't notice at 1440p or 4K where the GPU sets the limit. Early in 2026 the 9800X3D dipped to about $444 while the 9850X3D sold for around $50 more.
Who should get which
- 1080p high-refresh or competitive esports: either one. The 9800X3D is the value pick.
- 1440p or 4K with a mid-range GPU: the 9800X3D, and spend the difference on the GPU.
- You want the newest chip and price doesn't matter: the 9850X3D.
- Tight budget: look at the 6-core 7600X3D or a used 7800X3D on AM5.
Pairing tips
- A B650 or B850 board is plenty. X870E only matters for extra USB4 or PCIe 5.0 slots.
- DDR5-6000 CL30 is the sweet spot, but with RAM prices high, DDR5-5600 costs little performance.
- A good dual-tower air cooler handles either chip. No 360mm AIO required.
